Large Bible Box

Large Magnetic Closure Maple and Walnut Sliding Lid Box

This box was made to house a family bible. The family is from St. Johns, Newfoundland and the client wanted us to inlay a map of Newfoundland on the lid. We settled on an elevation of the family church for the front of the box and produced the butternut and maple inly from photographs of the church.

Surrounding the map on the lid is a border device featuring a corner detail from the front of the bible itself. The case is joined by 3 fine dovetails at each corner. The sides and top are walnut and the back and front maple.

On the inside we lined the box with cherry and used waterbase instead of the usual varnish oil to prevent any oil reaching the bible.
